How It Got Started
The Beginning...
In 2020, Pennsylvania held it's first Braille Challenge sponsored by The Braille Institute of America. It was a huge success and the event solidified the need for future events to support and promote Visually Impaired students across the Commonwealth. The seeds were planted for the beginning of an adventure.

The Cane Quest was on the radar for the team of Berks County O&Mer's. With a need for a new way to support the VI/B students in realizing their independence as safe travelers, the decision was made to move forward with planning another awesome event in Berks County, PA...the First Annual Cane Quest!

With Kutztown University supporting the education of future Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments, the venue was chosen and planning commenced. Kutztown was a perfect fit for our Cane Quest in 2022 and we look forward to sharing another Cane Quest at KU in 2023!

2024...Moving forward into the next year, we are delighted to be able to hold the 2nd Annual PA Regional Braille Challenge at PaTTAN Central in the Harrisburg, PA area. Building off of the success of 2020, we hope to have an even larger attendance of our VI/B students from across the Commonwealth and neighboring states.

The Veering Cane is a small group of professionals in the field of educating students with Visual Impairments/Blindness who are always looking for volunteers and assistance in planning and running the Braille Challenge and Cane Quest.
